Dear Parish Volunteer,
In February 2015, Pope Francis in a letter to senior clergy stated that "Families need to know that the church is making every effort to protect their children". Major progress has been made in this area over the last number of years and we in the CSPS are only too aware and appreciative of the great contribution that parish volunteers have made to ensure this be the case.
Apart from safeguarding children in our parishes, Archbishop Martin has also requested that the CSPS take on the responsibility for ensuring that parishes also put in place practical policies for the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. This is a very positive development for, as we know, there are many vulnerable adults in our parishes that depend on the work of volunteers to enhance their spiritual and social wellbeing with the parish family.
One of the core values of our Christian calling is that the strong always protect the more vulnerable members of our church.
Signed: Garry Kehoe, Child Safeguarding & Protection Services.
We had a very useful information session in the parish conference room, facilitated by Garry Kehoe and attended by a large number of parish volunteers, on Wednesday 30th January 2019. The purpose of this session was to outline the practical aspects that all volunteers should be aware of when working and interacting with children and vulnerable adults. It was also an ideal opportunity for parish volunteers to ask questions and offer opinions. The Parish Safeguarding team is very grateful to Garry for coming to talk to us.
