Habemus Papum - - We have a Pope. Just after 6 p.m.(Irish time) on 13 March 2013 the bells rang from St. Peter's Basilica & white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel signalling a new Pope had been elected.
The 76 year old Jesuit, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina, was elected Pope to succeed Pope Benedict XVI by the conclave of 115 Cardinals in the Vatican.
He was elected on the 5th vote shortly after 6pm Irish time on the 2nd day of the conclave.
He chose the papal name Francis in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi. He is both the first Jesuit
Pope and the first Pope from the Americas. He is also the first Pope from outside Europe since
Gregory III in the 8th century.
The 76 Year old Archbishop of Buenos Aires has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina.
In his first words after being elected Pope, Pope Francis said it seemed his brother
cardinals "went to the end of the earth" to find a new Pope.
He thanked Pope Emeritus Benedict for his work for the church, and said the world should set off on a path of love and fraternity. He asked the faithful to pray for him.
